Freshman Hassan Whiteside is the Marshall University Student Athlete of the Week ending Jan. 24. Whiteside was named the C-USA Rookie of the Week by a media panel representing each conference member for games through Jan. 24.

Whiteside averaged 14.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks for the Thundering Herd in games against in-state rival No. 11/12 West Virginia and league-leader UAB. Marshall fell in both games by an average of just five points. Against WVU, Whiteside scored a team-high 18 points, hitting 6-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 free throws. In Saturday's two-point loss to UAB, the freshman registered his 10th double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. He also blocked five shots, bringing his season total to 102 for the season.

This is Whiteside's fourth C-USA Rookie of the Week honor and his second in a row.
