Canty Named All-Conference USA

Canty's 5.7 assists per game ranks 26th in the nation

March 10, 2014

IRVING, Texas – On the eve of the Conference USA basketball tournament, Marshall redshirt freshman point guard Kareem Canty (Harlem, N.Y.) was named to the 2013-14 All-Conference USA third team, the league office announced Monday.

The first, second and third teams were chosen by league coaches and a media panel representing the 16 member schools. The third-team selection marks the seventh in the Herd’s nine-year history in the league and the first since 2011-12 (guard Damier Pitts).

In 31 games this season, Canty has averaged 16.4 points (fifth in C-USA) and 5.7 assists per game (third in C-USA); with his assist average ranking 26th in Division I. His strong numbers were sustained throughout the season as the first-year player was named C-USA Freshman of the Week for three consecutive weeks (Dec. 2, 9 and 16).

Canty has led or tied for the lead in assists for the Thundering Herd in 28 of the 31 games this season. Having been dangerous as a scorer and helper, Canty has posted four double-doubles on the season, all having come from a combination of points and assists.

With a 22-point performance against Charlotte (March 6) to close out the regular season, Canty eclipsed the 500-point mark. His accomplishment marks the 39th time it has been achieved in Marshall hoops history, and among freshmen trails only those of Skip Henderson (584 in 1984-85) and DeAndre Kane (513 in 2010-11).

Over the weekend, Canty was named the College Sports Madness Conference USA Freshman of Year and the College Hoops Daily Rookie of the Year, along with having been named to the College Sports Madness All-Conference USA second team and the College Hoops Daily All-Conference USA Team.

More all-conference awards will be announced on Tuesday, with Canty and other members of the Herd hoping to receive additional postseason honors.

The Herd will begin postseason play against Florida Atlantic on Tuesday at 8 p.m. (ET) at the Don Haskins Center.
