Herd to play five conference champions
Aug 27, 2013
HUNTINGTON, W.Va - Road games at Penn State, South Carolina and Vanderbilt, along with a neutral site contest with West Virginia, highlight the Marshall men's basketball schedule which was announced Tuesday.
The Thundering Herd hosts Concord on Oct. 28 in an exhibition before opening the regular season and a 16-game home schedule against South Carolina State on Nov. 8. On Nov. 12, Marshall will host Rio Grande and then head west on I-64 for a game at regional rival Morehead State on Nov. 17. It will be the 95th meeting in the longstanding series which the Herd leads, 50-44, Marshall defeated the Eagles 70-67 last season.
Marshall will host three schools over six days as part of the Roundball Showcase, an NCAA exempt event which also includes a Nov. 30 road game at East Tennessee State. The three home games in the event will be a first-time meeting with Stephen F. Austin (Nov. 21), a third consecutive meeting with UNC Wilmington (Nov. 23) and meeting with future Conference USA member Western Kentucky (Nov. 26). The Lumberjacks went 27-5 last season to capture the Southland Conference title and a bid to the National Invitation Tournament. The Hilltoppers won the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title last season to earn an NCAA Tournament berth.
After the game against ETSU in Johnson City, Tenn., the Herd returns back to Tennessee on Dec. 5 for a first-time meeting against Vanderbilt in Nashville.
The game against the Commodores begins a tough stretch for the Herd, which plays at Penn State on Dec. 7, followed by the annual Capital Classic against Big 12 Conference opponent West Virginia on Dec. 14 in Charleston.
Following a Dec. 17 game against Alice Lloyd, the Herd will host a second-ever meeting with Arkansas State on Dec. 21. The Red Wolves went 19-12 last season and won the Sun Belt Conference's West Division.
Marshall will then play two tough road games, Dec. 30 at South Carolina and Jan. 2 at Akron. It will be the sixth meeting with the Gamecocks, members of the SEC, the first since 1980. Akron, the reigning Mid-American Conference champions, went 26-7 last season and was a No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The games with Penn State and South Carolina are set up as home-and-home series, meaning both schools will play against the Herd next season at Cam Henderson Center. Marshall last hosted Penn State in the 1991-92 season -- along with Pitt -- and last hosted South Carolina in 1980-81. It will be the first time since Dec. 18, 1999 (Georgia) that the Herd hosted an SEC school and the first time that it hosts Big Ten and SEC schools in the same season.
The Herd will host Presbyterian on Jan. 5 before opening Conference USA play at UTSA on Jan. 9. The remaining C-USA schedule, which was released earlier this summer, is as follows: at UTEP (Jan. 11), vs. North Texas (Jan. 16), vs. Tulsa (Jan. 18), at Rice (Jan. 23), at Louisiana Tech (Jan. 25), vs. FIU (Jan. 30), vs. Florida Atlantic (Feb. 1), at Southern Miss (Feb. 6), at Tulane (Feb. 8), at Charlotte (Feb. 15), vs. UAB (Feb. 20), vs. Middle Tennessee (Feb. 22), at Old Dominion (Feb. 27), vs. East Carolina (March 2), vs. Charlotte (March 6).
Game times will be announced at a later date. Television networks have the right to change times and possibly alter dates of various games on the schedule.

Austin (SLC - regular), Western Kentucky (SBC - tournament). Marshall will play three 2013 NCAA Tournament participants which are: Akron, Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky...
