S-A Athlete of the Week: Elijah Pittman|
Nov. 11, 2013
Senior forward Elijah Pittman scored a career-high 31 points against South Carolina State in Marshall’s home opener on Nov. 8 and is this week’s Marshall Student-Athlete of the Week.
Pittman will share the first Conference USA Player of the Week honors of the season with FIU’s Rakeem Buckles, who averaged 17.7 points and 12 rebounds per game in three games last week.
His 31 points set a career-high as he surpassed his previous best of 23 which he scored at Tulsa on Feb. 6, 2013. He shot 9-of-17 from the field and 5-of-11 from beyond the arc for the Herd in just 29 minutes. Those numbers marked career highs in field goals made and three-point field goals made. He also shot 8-of-15 from the free throw line and pulled in three rebounds.
A native of Covington, Ky., Pittman is the top returning scorer in C-USA after having averaged 16.1 points per game last season. His 31 points were the most points by a Herd player in a season opener since Ronald Blackshear scored 32 in a 92-90 win at Niagara on Nov. 22, 2002.
Pittman was also named to the College Sports Madness Conference USA Player of the Week for his efforts.
