HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -
Marshall has a chance to start the season 3-0 for the first time since 2007 as its men's basketball team hosts Northwestern State on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Thundering Herd (2-0) is coming off a 58-44 win over Jacksonville State on Sunday. It was the second-straight game in which Marshall held its opponent under 50 points. The feat is a rare one for Marshall as the last time the Herd held its opponent to less than 50 points in back-to-back games was in 1947.
Marshall has been led early on by junior forward Robert Goff who is averaging 12.5 points and 5.0 rebounds. DeAndre Kane, a member of the preseason all-Conference USA First Team, is averaging 10.5 points and 5.0 rebounds. The sophomore guard also has 11 assists and six steals early on this season. Junior forward Dennis Tinnon is shooting 70-percent (7-10) from the field for an average of 9.0 points and 9.0 rebounds.
Northwestern State (2-1) is coming off a 67-60 win at Alabama State on Thursday. The Demon's leading scorer, junior point guard Shamir Davis, nearly doubled his career high Thursday night by sinking 11-of-14 shots from the field in a 27-point performance. He is currently averaging 14.7 points per game.
Last season, NSU went 18-14 including a 10-6 second place finish in the Southland Conference. Also last season, The Demons led the nation in blocked shots, thanks in large part to 6-7 center William Mosley and his NCAA leading 4.9 blocks per game. Mosley is back for his senior season, one of eight returning letterwinners, all of whom are from Louisiana.
The Demons are coached by Mike McConathy who is in his 13th season as head coach.
Marshall leads the all-time series 1-0. On Dec. 30, 1988, the Herd beat the Demons 101-91 in Asheville, N.C. in the TCBY Classic.
