Game Notes

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.--The Marshall University men’s basketball team hosts Lamar (2-3) in game three of the Global Sports Invitational Nov. 25 in the Cam Henderson Center.                

Marshall (2-1) is playing Lamar for only the second time in school history.  The Cardinals defeated the Thundering Herd 75-67 Jan. 9, 1985 in Huntington.  Lamar is 2-2 entering a Nov. 23 game at Ohio.  The Cardinals are playing game three of a four game road trip that marks the first time that Lamar is playing four consecutive non-conference road games in four different states.

Four of the five Cardinals’ starters are averaging in double figures, led by Kendrick Harris.  The 6-1 Los Angeles Southwest Junior College transfer is tallying 12.2 points per game.  Backcourt mate Anthony Miles is scoring 11.4 points per game while averaging 4.5 assists per game.   Forwards Charlie Harper (10.6) and Justin Nabors (11.4) are also scoring in double digits per game.  Harper is the Cardinals’ rebounding leader (9.0).

Defending CIT champion Old Dominion handed Marshall a 70-62 men’s basketball defeat Nov. 21.   The Thundering Herd scored the opening basket on a Darryl Merthie (Sr., Sanford, Fla.) layup off a steal and led for most of the early part of the game. A Gerald Lee layup tied the score 16-16 with 9:50 to go in the opening frame.  A Marsharee Neely layup and a Ben Finney jumper gave ODU a four-point advantage.

Cam Miller (R-So., Wheelersburg, Ohio) connected on a three-pointer to make it 20-19 with 7:32 remaining.  Old Dominion would outscore MU 8-2 over the remainder of thse half, taking a 28-21 advantage into halftime. Leading 38-28 with 16:33 left, the Monarchs used an 8-2 spurt to push the lead into double figures.  ODU pushed the lead to as much as 16 down the stretch.  Marshall outscored Old Dominion 11-3 in the final 56 seconds to make it the final 70-62.


 

 

Damier Pitts (So., Charlotte, N.C.) scored 12 of team high 14points in the second half.  The 5-10 point guard went 6-of-8 from the field and also dished out a team high four assists.  Tyler Wilkerson (Sr., Lexington, Ky.) tallied 12 points and seven rebounds, Lee, who is the nephew of former Marshall great Russell Lee scored 22 points.  Old Dominion outrebounded Marshall 40-26, but turned the ball over 17 times compared to 13 for the Thundering Herd.

Individual game tickets are on sale for $13 in the lower bowl, $10 in the upper reserved, and $9 for general admission.   Season tickets for all home games in the lower bowl chair back sections are $205 for the season and require a Big Green Scholarship Foundation donation. Bench seating located behind the west basket is $180 for the season.
