HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University men's basketball player Hassan Whiteside is featured in two national articles heading into this weekend's matchup against High Point University.
Whiteside is spotlighted in the Dec. 28 edition of ESPN The Magazine's College Basketball column. The column is written by Matt Giles and talks about big men in the college game heading towards the "mid-major" programs. The article also features a quote from Marshall assistant coach Darren Tillis. The magazine is on newsstands now and can be found online at the following URL: http://insider.espn.go.com/insider/espnmag
Whiteside's defensive prowess has earned him "Top Defensive Performance" by NCAA.com's Anthony Oliva III during the non-conference season. The following is Olivia's entry on the NCAA.com website;
You may not know his name, but opponents who've had the unfortunate occurrence of meeting him in the post certainly do. I'm talking about Marshall's freshman forward Hassan Whiteside, who against Ohio on Nov. 28 amassed nine blocks - second most in a single game this year - and 17 rebounds in only 29 minutes of action. In this game, Marshall held Ohio to 25.9 percent shooting in a 60-53 win. Only confounding the issue here is Whiteside's performance on Wednesday night, when he tortured Brescia for 11 blocks and 14 rebounds in 25 minutes of action. On the season, Whiteside is averaging 12.1 points, 9.1 rebounds and 5.2 blocks per game.
