Minutemen Await Thundering Herd Men In Amherst
AMHERST, Mass. - The Marshall men's basketball team (3-3) hits the road this Saturday to take on the UMass Minutemen (2-4) at 4 p.m. The game can be seen live nationwide on the ESPN Full Court basketball package and locally in Huntington on WSAZ-TV and in Toledo, Ohio, on WB-TV 5.
Marshall improved to 3-3, 1-0 in the Mid-American Conference with an 85-76 victory over Northern Illinois on December 13th. A.W. Hamilton posted 11 assists, against no turnovers, in 34 minutes of action in the Herd win - a game in which Marshall never trailed. Ronny Dawn led four Marshall players in double-figures with 16 points.
Massachusetts enters the game with a 2-4 record, with wins over St. Francis (NY) and Vermont, and losses to Texas Tech, Hartford, Boston College, and Central Connecticut. Anthony Anderson, one of the most explosive point guards in the Atlantic 10, leads the Minutemen in scoring, averaging 16 points per game. Rashaun Freeman, a sophomore forward, leads the team in rebounding, averaging 8.2 per contest.
The Thundering Herd lead the relatively new all-time series, 3-2. UMass won the first meeting between the two schools in Amherst, 61-59, in 1997, and won the last game played last year at the Mullins Center, 81-58. Marshall won at Amherst in 1999 and in the Henderson Center in 1998 and 2001.
