Marshall Hosts Akron on New Year's Day|

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - For the first time since 1955, the Marshall men's basketball team will play a game on New Year's Day as the Thundering Herd hosts Akron at the Cam Henderson Center on Sunday at 4 p.m.
Marshall (9-3) and Akron (7-6) haven't met since both were in the Mid-American Conference together. The Herd leads the all-time series 11-9, but Akron won the last meeting, 71-64 on March 2, 2005.
The Herd is coming off a 79-74 loss at Belmont on Thursday. Sophomore guard DeAndre Kane scored 25 points against the Bruins and leads Marshall in scoring with 17.3 points per game.
Marshall has been dominant in rebounding the entire season and is currently third in the nation with 42.8 rebounds per game. The Herd leads the nation with 17.6 offensive rebounds per game.
No one has contributed to the rebounding numbers more than Dennis Tinnon. The junior forward leads the team and ranks 15th in the nation with 10.6 rebounds per game. He also ranks third with 4.8 offensive rebounds per contest.
Senior guard Shaquille Johnson is just eight points away from becoming Marshall's 48th 1,000 point scorer. The Herd has the ninth most 1,000 point scorers of any NCAA Division I school.
Akron is coming off a 76-75 overtime loss to VCU on Thursday. Senior forward Nikola Cvetinovic led the Zips with 21 points in the game. For the season, Akron is led by junior center Zeke Marshall with 11.3 points per game.
Akron is very accurate from three-point range, making 39.2 percent of its shots from beyond-the-arc. Sophomore guard Brian Walsh ranks 10th in the nation with 54.3 percent shooting from three-point range.
Marshall is 1-0 all time on New Year's Day. On Jan. 1, 1955, Marshall defeated Washington & Lee, a private liberal arts school in Lexington, Virginia, 89-79.
