R-SOPHOMORE SEASON (2016): Awarded a scholarship before camp in August … Played in all 12 games, making a big impact on special teams … Finished with eight tackles and 0.5 tackles for a loss … Named to the 2016-17 C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll (3.0 or greater GPA).

R-FRESHMAN SEASON (2015): Backup long snapper and linebacker and also on special teams … Played in final six regular-season games as third-unit linebacker, making one tackle in 52-0 rout of FIU … Saw 10 defensive snaps (3 versus Norfolk State; 7 versus FIU) … Named to 2015-16 C-USA Commissioner’s Honor roll (3.0 or greater GPA).

HERD FILE: Born Dec. 1, 1995 in Martinsburg, West Virginia … Came to Marshall as preferred walk-on in 2014 as long snapper candidate … Son of former Herd football captain and linebacker Eric Gates (1989-90) and nephew of Dave Piepenbrink, former Marshall baseball player and later coach (1998-2006) … Class AAA All-State second team linebacker as 2013 senior at Hedgesville High School … Also one of state’s top pass catchers in 2013 with 54 catches for 740 yards … All-State Honorable Mention as junior … Played baseball and basketball at Hedgesville, where he was teammate of current Herd shooting guard CJ Burks in the latter sport … Played on 2011-12 Class AAA State Tournament basketball title team, Hedgesville’s first title since 1970.
