JUNIOR SEASON (2015): Was No. 2 tight end behind starter Ryan Yurachek, and recorded 19 receptions for 214 yards and one touchdown in 10 games … His TD came on first quarter, 1-yard pass from Chase Litton in OT loss at Middle Tennessee … Top receiving game was his first in FBS – four catches for 35 yards in season-opening win over Purdue, Marshall’s first win in history over a Big Ten Conference team … Had three catches each in losses to Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky … Former JUCO quarterback had an incomplete pass at Middle … Named to 2015-16 C-USA Commissioner’s Honor roll (3.0 or greater GPA).

Byrd cited Hewitt’s transition and success at Marshall as a factor in his decision to join the Herd … Played at quarterback and tight end in 2014 for Georgia Military … Completed 3-of-4 passes for 83 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions in 2014. He also had 15 carries for 22 yards and 15 catches for 263 yards and three touchdowns … As a GMC freshman in 2013, Byrd was 16-of-35 passing for 229 yards, three TDs and one interception last season. He also rushed for 116 yards on 36 carries and one TD … Was four-year starter at QB at Albany (Ga.) High School and made the Albany Herald’s Dynamite Dozen …Completed 83 percent of his passes for more than 1,900 yards and 21 TDs as junior … As a senior playing behind inexperienced line, he completed 78 percent for 1,420 yards and 16 scores, and ran for 625 yards and six TDs … His mother died when he was six, but an aunt, Claudia Marshall, raised Byrd and his brother and sister … Credits his aunt for introducing him to football through the Boys & Girls Club … Also was known for his rebounding in high school basketball and reached the state track meet in the high jump.
