Voted as 2014 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year by league coaches … Led the Herd defense in a 13-1 season, making 123 tackles, the C-USA high for 2014 … Selected as the Herd’s Defensive MVP by his coaches … Played both inside linebacker spots (Mike and Will) … In two seasons after coming to Marshall from junior college football, posted 208 tackles, including 16.5 for loss and 7.5 sacks, with two interceptions, four pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble … Started 25 of 28 games in two seasons … Bounced back for his senior season after undergoing neck surgery on Feb. 25 for a herniated disc, pinched nerve and bone spurs.
SENIOR SEASON (2014): Named as 2014 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year by league coaches, as Marshall won its first C-USA title … Led the Herd defense in a 13-1 season, making 123 tackles, including 13 for loss and five sacks … Selected as the Herd’s Defensive MVP by his coaches … Started 13 of 14 games (the final 13) … Played both inside linebacker spots (Mike and Will) … His first down interception of Louisiana Tech QB Cody Sokol with 1:35 left sealed the Herd’s Conference USA Championship Game win, 26-23 … Has eight or more tackles in seven games … Top game was 18-tackle performance in win over Florida Atlantic … Also had 17 stops in win at UAB and posted 14 twice (Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee) … Had 22 tackles through five games, when will linebacker Evan McKelvey was lost for the season due to an ACL tear; Hewitt averaged 12 tackles per game after that.
JUNIOR SEASON (2013): Was second on the team with 85 tackles (30 solo), including 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks...Also made an interception, and had a pass breakup, fumble recovery and forced fumble ... Had 10 tackles against Virginia Tech and East Carolina.
HERD FILE: Born April 6, 1993 … Graduating (May 2015) in business management at MU … Came to Marshall after two junior college seasons at Georgia Military College … Also had offers from Colorado State, South Alabama and Appalachian State ... Had 65 tackles, five tackles for loss and five pass breakups for Georgia Military in 2012, when he played a hybrid safety/linebacker spot ... Had three years to play two seasons at Marshall ... Originally a Class of 2011 prospect from Rockdale County High School in Conyers, Ga., he had scholarship offers from South Carolina, Buffalo, Middle Tennessee State, and Western Kentucky.
