SENIOR SEASON (2014): Led prolific Herd offense (averaging 559 yards per game) in 13-1 season that included school’s first Conference USA title and first national ranking in final polls (Nos. 22/23) since 2002 … Named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year by league coaches, his third straight season for a major C-USA award … All-conference first team pick, and voted the Herd Team MVP by his coaches … Featured in major feature stories by several publications and websites, including Sports illustrated and USA Today … Was a candidate for major national awards, including the Maxwell, Walter Camp, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm, Manning and Davey O'Brien National Quarterback awards ... completed 267-of-451 passes (59.2 percent) for 3,903 yards and 40 touchdowns (the single-season school record), with13 interceptions; an efficiency of 155.4 … Also rushed for a career-best 482 yards with eight scores (622 yards gained; 140 lost on sacks) … Passed for more than 400 yards twice (Ohio, 425; WKU, 417).
JUNIOR SEASON (2013): Guided Marshall to its first double-digit victory season since 2002 as Herd went 10-4, reaching its first C-USA Championship Game ... Cato was named MVP in Marshall's 31-20 Military Bowl victory over ACC member Maryland ... Torched the Terps with 28-of-44 passing for 337 yards ... Was voted Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year by league coaches, and was All-C-USA second team QB ... Threw for career-high 456 yards (33-of-58) in 45-34 victory at Tulsa on Nov. 14, also tying his own personal high of five TD passes in a game ... Threw for five TDs in home wins over Southern Miss and Miami (Ohio) and four in win at FIU ... Was intercepted more than once in only one of 14 games (2 in 3OT loss at Virginia Tech) ... Left the pocket more often than previous season and gained career-high 59 yards on 9 carries in season-opening rout of Miami (Ohio) ... Had other rushing games of 45, 46 and 47 yards ... Selected to College FootballNews.com's All-Conference USA team ... Led all FBS QBs in completions per game (33.83) and passing yards per game (350.08) ... Ran the fifth-ranked scoring offense in the nation ... Led Conference USA in passing yards (4,201), passing touchdowns (37), and total offense ... His 408 pass completions is the Herd single season record and broke the old mark (Tony Petersen. 340 in 1987) handily ... Started in every game for the Herd ... Completed a career-high of 45 passes -- the Herd record -- for 439 yards against Purdue (Sept 29) ... FRESHMAN SEASON (2011): Completed 182 of 304 passes for 2,059 yards with 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions...Came up big in the overtime win against East Carolina with a 23-for-29, 341-yard, two-touchdown effort ... Completed 27 of 42 passes for 275 yards, three touchdowns and two picks in the huge home win over Southern Miss to earn him National Freshman of the Week honors by Rivals.com ... Led Herd to September win at BCS conference member Louisville with two touchdown passes ... Tossed a season-long 77-yard bomb for a touchdown to Aaron Dobson on the first play of the East Carolina contest ... Picked up another 32 yards on the ground.
