In May, named as one of six Marshall football players on Athlon’s preseason Conference USA all-conference team … Added seven pounds to his 6-foot-7 frame in the offseason.

R-SOPHOMORE SEASON (2016): Continued to emerge as one of the team’s most important defensive players and leaders … Named a game captain six times as a sophomore … Played in 11 games with 10 starts … Finished 2016 with 18 career starts, most of any returning defensive player … Finished sixth on the team in tackles (54) … Made 14 solo tackles … Recorded 6.5 tackles for a loss and 4.5 sacks … Broke up two passes and forced a fumble … Registered a season-high four tackles in four different games with seven (North Texas, FAU, ODU and Middle Tennessee) … Had a tackle for a loss in six different games, including a season high 2.0 in a win against FAU … Contributed to sacks against Morgan State, Akron, North Texas, FAU and Middle Tennessee State … Team-best 12 quarterback hurries … Ranked second on the team in sacks and fourth in tackles for a loss.

R-FRESHMAN SEASON (2015): Emerged during season as not only productive player, but played way into starting role at end in first half of season and was voted to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team … Played in 12 of 13 games (missing Ohio, Sept. 12) and started final eight contests … Played 510 snaps in final 11 games in defensive line rotation … First start came against Southern Miss (Oct. 9) … Height and length created problems for opposing blockers and quarterbacks throughout season … Finished season with 59 tackles (15 solo), with 8.5 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 2 pass breakups, 3 fumbles recovered and 12 QB hurries … Had Herd’s lone blocked kick of the season when he knocked down a Southern Miss field goal attempt … Earned starting role with a 12-tackle performance in previous game, against Old Dominion; also had two sacks and another TFL against Monarchs … Had eight tackles in win over North Texas and overtime loss at Middle Tennessee … In opening win over Purdue played only on special teams … Went from 13 snaps in Week 4 (Kent State) to 77 two games later (Southern Miss.).

FRESHMAN SEASON (2014): Redshirted … Played on Scout Team.

HERD FILE: Born Nov. 12, 1995 … Associated Press 2013 All-Ohio Division VI first team selection on defensive line … All-Ohio Divisions V-VI third team pick on defensive line as a 2012 junior … Rated a two-star prospect by Rivals … Also had an offer from Washington and was in contact with Bowling Green, Toledo and West Virginia … Had 88 tackles, 22 tackles for loss and 15 sacks along with 20 catches for 250 yards and eight touchdowns for Hillsdale in 2013 … Had 66 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 11 sacks and three forced fumbles for Hillsdale (7-4) as a junior in 2012 … Was a two-sport athlete at Hillsdale, where he was the captain for the basketball and football teams.
