Marshall's second practice focused mainly on special teams and configuring the defense during another hot afternoon at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
First-year head coach Mark Snyder understands the importance of a strong special teams unit.
"All the good teams I have been a part of managed to win close games because of their special teams," Snyder said. "We put an emphasis on the special teams today. We want to make it an offensive and defensive weapon for us.
"A good special teams unit is the glue that brings the offense and defense together."
Snyder's coaching staff then turned their attention to the Herd's defensive scheme, as well as working in the newcomers to the squad
"We are trying to figure out who we are defensively," Snyder added. "We also have to work the new guys in shape. Everything is difficult when you are tired and out of shape. It's very hard to compete when you are tired."
Fans will have their chance to meet the Thundering Herd Friday during an autograph session from 6:30-7 p.m. at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
Fans are also reminded that Saturday is Choose-A-Seat Day for the 2005 football season from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by Adelphia and Charter Communications. Following the West Lot festivities, fans are invited to witness the first open practice of the season on the new FieldTurf at the stadium from 3:20 to 5:20 p.m.
