The game captains included center Chris Jasperse and running back Essray Taliaferro on offense; and cornerbacks Darryl Roberts and Monterius Lovett on defense. It was Jasperse’s third selection of the season. Twelve players have been captains through five games this season (six of those 12 have served as captains multiple times).
With the victory, Marshall’s all-time Homecoming record is 59-45-8 in 112 Homecoming games.
Defensive end Ra’Shawde Myers’ first-quarter interception was the first of his Herd career and the first for a Marshall defensive lineman since defensive end Ryland Wilson recorded two picks in November 2007, vs. UCF (QB - Kyle Israel) and Houston (QB - Case Keenum).
Rakeem Cato’s first-quarter touchdown pass to Devon Johnson gives him a touchdown pass in 23 straight games, ranking second nationally among FBS active QBs (trailing Derek Carr of Fresno State, (24 straight games entering the weekend)
True freshman Amoreto Curraj had six kickoffs vs. UTSA for touchbacks, giving him 21 for the season. In coach Doc Holliday’s first three seasons at Marshall, the Herd totaled nine touchbacks.
Marshall’s 17 first-quarter points is most for the Herd in any first quarter since Marshall led Tulane, 21-0, at end of first quarter on Nov. 4, 2006, at Edwards Stadium, in a 42-21 Herd victory.
The 48-yard kick return late in the first half by Deandre Reaves was the longest of the season for Marshall. Reaves also has the second-longest return of the year, a 45-yard run back against Ohio.
Rakeem Cato’s first completion of the of the second half was the 690th of his Herd career, moving him into 3rd place in school history, passing Michael Payton’s 689 (he now trails just Chad Pennington with 1,026, and Byron Leftwich with 939). Cato’s 22 completions on the day now has him with 697 in his career.
Rakeem Cato’s 24th pass attempt of the game (7:30 left in third quarter) gave him 1,060 in his Herd career, passing Carl Fodor for No. 4 on the all-time list (Michael Payton is No. 3 at 1,108). Cato now has a total of 1,068 pass attempts in his career after recording 32 against UTSA.
Marshall has not missed a point after touchdown in 38 straight games (sixth-highest nationally) and has made 140 consecutive (seventh nationally) as kicker Justin Haig is 24-24 through the first five games of the season.
The Herd has intercepted nine passes through the first five games on the season, tying the interception total of the 2012 Marshall defense.
