Marshall Football Game Notes – Oct. 12, 2013
Marshall Thundering Herd (4-2, 2-0) vs. Florida Atlantic Owls (2-5, 1-4)

FINAL SCORE: Marshall 24, Florida Atlantic 23

Marshall captains – chosen weekly by coach Doc Holliday and staff – for the FAU game were center Chris Jasperse (fourth straight game), quarterback Rakeem Cato (third time this season), defensive end Ra’Shawde Myers (first-time captain) and linebacker Neville Hewitt (first-time captain) on defense. Fourteen players have been captains through six games (six of those 14 selected multiple times).

Center Chris Jasperse made his team-leading 31st career start for Marshall.

Of the 34 players (32 available) from Florida on the Marshall roster, 20 were on the Herd travel roster on Saturday. Two of the 34 are sitting out this season as FBS transfers – defensive lineman Ricardo Williams (Homestead, Fla./Miami) and defensive back Donaldven Manning (Miami/Virginia Tech).

Marshall Offense

Rakeem Cato’s touchdown pass to Gator Hoskins in the fourth quarter extends Cato’s streak of consecutive games with a touchdown pass to 24, second in the nation to Fresno State’s Derek Carr (25 games, off this weekend). Marshall’s school record is 26 games by Chad Pennington (every game in 1997 and 1998 seasons).

Hoskins’ touchdown catch is the 18th of his career, tying him for 10th in Herd history with Nate Poole, LaVorn Colclough and Antavious Wilson

Cato’s 216 passing yards gives him 1,572 on the season. The only previous Herd quarterback to throw for 1,500 yards for three consecutive seasons were Michael Payton, Chad Pennington and Byron Leftwich.

Wide receiver Tommy Shuler had five catches which gave him 167 for his career, passing Aaron Dobson (165) for 11th place on the Herd all-time list. Shuler had 37 yards, moving him to 1,716 yards for his career and passed Bruce Hammond for 15th place in Herd history.

Marshall Defense

Linebacker Jermaine Holmes’ interception in the second quarter was the 10th of season for Marshall, topping last season’s total of nine interceptions in 12 games. It also was the fourth pick by a Herd linebacker this season (Raheem Waiters, Evan McKelvey, Neville Hewitt and Holmes). It was Holmes’ 2nd career interception.

Marshall Special Teams

Devon Smith’s 77-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter was the first punt return touchdown for Marshall since Sept. 4, 2011, at West Virginia, by Andre Booker (87 yards). It was also the eighth-longest punt return in Herd history. It also matched the longest punt return in Conference USA this season (Tulsa, Trey Watts vs. Oklahoma on Sept. 14).

Tyler Williams’ six punts ranks second for most in his two-season career. He punted seven times in a loss to UCF last season.

Justin Haig’s 41-yard field goal as time expired was his longest of the season. His previous long was 35 yards against Miami (Ohio).
