Marshall Football Postgame Quotes
Marshall 61, Southern Miss 13
Nov. 2, 2013
Doc Holliday, head coach
"I felt going into this football game it was important we got out to a fast start. I thought we did that. I also felt it was important for us to come out fast in the second half and I felt like we did that as well. We hit a little bump in the road in the second quarter where we had a couple of turnovers that shouldn't have happened. We fumbled the ball going into the end zone that one time which was ridiculous. For the most part I thought we played pretty clean and now we need to put that one behind us and get ready to go play next week."
On winning heavily favored games
"That's what has to happen. Games like these are the games that worry you the most. These guys walk to class every day and walk down the street with everyone telling them how they're going to go win this football game. As a coach, you worry about these kinds of games more than you do a big-time game. You have to give Southern Miss head coach Todd Monken credit. They played really hard. He'll get them going in the right direction. I’m just happy with the way our kids came out and responded. It was important that they did that."
On the mishaps of the second quarter
"Those things shouldn't happen and we have to get the couple of issues that we had fixed. It's important that we come back and play very well next weekend."
On Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato's performance
"With the exception of the one turnover he had I thought he played well. I think we were 300-plus rushing and 300-plus passing. That balance I believe helped us. A lot of that was on him (Cato). He made some great checks. We had some calls that were actually throws, but he checked to runs. A lot of the run, pass options he did a great job of getting us into the right call. He managed the game extremely well."
On the confidence boost early in the game starting quick
"Anytime you are playing a team like that you have to start fast. That was one of our goals all week; come out and get going fast. We did that. I was happy that not only did we do it in the first half, but we duplicated it in the second half."
Tiquan Lang, freshman safety
On the success of the first quarter and the mishaps of the second
“We knew we came out to make a statement. We didn’t care that we had a big lead, we just had to keep grinding.”
Brandon Sparrow, senior defensive lineman
On how important it was to put Southern Miss away early
“It was very important. They haven’t won any games this year but they have nothing to lose. They were just coming trying to ruin our season, and we couldn’t let that happen. We just came out and played to our best abilities and got the win.”
Tommy Shuler, junior wide receiver
On the freedom given to Cato and the successful connection between them during the game
“They gave him the freedom earlier in the week to check anything he sees. He went out there and made great checks. We just worried about getting the first down.”
Essray Taliaferro, senior running back
On getting back to playing ‘Marshall football’
“The big goal for this game was to start fast. This week was especially emphasized by coming out in the first quarter and scoring on the first drive and then having our defense make stops.”
Rakeem Cato, junior quarterback
On the offensive freedom he was given during the game
“Coach told me before we even played that I had a lot more freedom to kind of check things out, and that’s what we did. We put ourselves in a great position to win the ball game.”
