Game notes – Southern Miss at Marshall – Nov. 25, 2017
The game captains, as selected by Marshall head coach Doc Holliday and his staff, were senior tight end Ryan Yurachek (offense), senior defensive lineman Blake Keller (defense), senior specialist Kaare Vedvik (special teams) and senior running back Tony Pittman (special teams).
Southern Mississippi took the series lead against Marshall, 7-6. It is USM’s second straight win in the series after MU had won five in a row.
Marshall senior tight end Ryan Yurachek extended his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 41 games, the fourth-longest active streak in FBS. The streak is tied for the second-longest streak in school history with Tommy Shuler, who had a 41-game streak from Dec. 20, 2011 to Dec. 23, 2014.
MU junior quarterback Chase Litton passed College Football Hall of Fame QB Michael Payton on the program’s career completions list. Litton has 710 career completions. Payton completed 689 passes from 1989-92.
Litton also surpassed Payton in career touchdown passes with 70. Litton tossed four touchdowns against Southern Miss to move into fourth in program history in career touchdown passes. Payton had 69 career touchdown passes.
Yurachek’s seven receptions give him 47 for the season, a new single-season personal best. He had 44 receptions in 2015. His 430 receiving yards on the season are also a career best, topping his total of 417 from 2015. Yurachek’s nine touchdowns on the season ties his single-season best performance from 2015.
Yurachek’s three receiving touchdowns pushed his career total to 25, which is No. 2 in program history for touchdown catches by a tight end. It was his third multi-TD game of the season. Yurachek has at least one receiving touchdown in 20 of 50 career games.
Senior receiver Hyleck Foster had 87 receiving yards, which is a career best. His previous career best came during his freshmen season: 71 yards vs. WKU on Nov. 28, 2014. His 42-yard reception in the third quarter was the longest of his career.
Litton finished with 308 passing yards, his ninth 300-yard passing game of his career. He had his sixth career game of at least four passing touchdowns.
Linebacker Chase Hancock set a new career high with 18 tackles.
Marshall finished with 382 yards of total offense, the fourth-best total against Southern Miss this season. The 308 passing yards are the third-best total against USM’s defense.
The Herd defense held USM to 4.6 yards per play, the best performance by a Conference USA defense against Southern Miss this season. The only two other teams to hold USM to fewer than 5.0 yards per play were SEC schools Kentucky (4.67) and Tennessee (3.67).
