Holliday Press Conference

Marshall (7-5, 4-4 C-USA)
Doc Holliday, head coach
Opening statement…
Well, thought going into that was going to be a fight and that what it was. Thought it would come down to a couple plays and that’s what it did. Unfortunately, we turned the ball over three times and you do that you can’t win a football game. Came down to the kick there at the end to send it into overtime, obviously we didn’t get it done. Southern Miss played extremely well. Thought we did some good things but at the end of the day they made one more play then we did.”

On the team’s struggles…
Well, I don’t know. Like I said, at the end of the day, you have to find a way to win and we didn’t get that done. There were different plays throughout that game that we had the opportunity to win the game and that didn’t happen. The kids work extremely hard every day and unfortunately, we didn’t get it done.”

On Marshall’s offense…
They’re an excellent defensive football team. You have to give them credit for that. Two of the better defenses in the league going at each other there. Thought we had some great field positions. That first kickoff return, we had some good field position with that. Unfortunately, we need to make our plays. When we get to their side of the field, we have to score more points and we didn’t get that done. Of course, the turnovers. We have good field positions a couple of time and turned the ball over which is unacceptable.”

On the time off leading up to the bowl game…
“I like this football team a lot. They’ve played extremely hard but they’ve got to get smarter and take care of the ball. This team has never been as issue as far as showing up and playing, they’ve done that all year. I’m proud of them for that, but unfortunately the last couple weeks have been a tough couple weeks. Getting beat by a field goal in the game a week ago, turn around and the extra point makes a difference this week. So there is no doubt there are two losses. These guys are resilient and these are tough kids. They’ve worked extremely hard. The leadership on this team will make sure they come back and prepare like we do for bowls games and get better.”

Chase Litton, junior quarterback
On Ryan Yurachek’s three touchdowns…
“On the last touchdown, I saw that Yurachek had one-on-one coverage, so I changed the play and gave him a chance to go up there and get it. The second one, we lulled them to sleep with a play-action and found him open in the end zone. The first one was just (Yurachek) being an athlete and going to get the ball. He’s a senior. He’s a guy who’s won a lot of games here and done everything for this program. That’s a guy who will always be remembered here.”

On the seniors…
“Ryan (Yurachek), Tony (Pittman), they’re my best friends. When I first came in, I was the fourth-string. I was a freshman who people really didn’t expect much from. I stuck with them. I came in and studied film with these guys and lifted with them. They believed in me.”

Ryan Yurachek, senior tight end
On the game…
“It’s unfortunate that it had to end that way for us. Walking off the field, I feel like we left some plays out there, but you can’t sulk around after that. We have to figure out where we’re going (bowl game) and get back to work.”

On the offense…
We had a lot of big throws to the outside and used the run to soften the defense up a bit. We called the right plays at the right time and Chase threw some great passes. It’s not about me, it’s not about my touchdowns. It’s about wanting to get a win for the 13 seniors today and we weren’t able to make that happen.”

Chase Hancock, redshirt junior linebacker
On Southern Miss…
“They always give us a really good game. We knew what kind of team they were coming into this. We knew that it was going to be a fight and come down to the end.”

On Southern Miss running back Ito Smith…
“He likes to kick outside the tackles and our game plan was to gang tackle him. He had a few big plays, but I feel like we did a good job for the most part.”

On the seniors…
“I hurt for them. We wanted to send them off with a win and it’s a shame that we didn’t get that done. We win as a team, we lose as a team. I hurt for them because those are my brothers. I wanted nothing more than to get the win for them.”

Rodney Allen, redshirt senior defensive back
On Southern Miss receiver Korey Robertson…
“(Robertson) has ten touchdowns on the season. He’s probably one of the best receivers that I’ve faced in this conference. He’s a good player.”

On his performance…
“I gave it my all today. I played to the best of my abilities. The main thing is that I wanted to do everything for my team and not just for myself and I feel like I did that today.”

Hyleck Foster, senior wide receiver
On his catch on the last drive that helped set up Ryan Yurachek’s third touchdown…
“(Ryan) Yurachek had a bender across the field. I had a go route and we somehow were in the same place. It tipped off his hands and was like a slow-motion play and I just caught it.

On the offensive game plan…
“We wanted to attack them through the air. We wanted to air raid them. We saw their defensive backs were smaller than our receivers, so we figured that we wanted to go at them through the air, I thought we did a good job of that, but we just ran out of time at the end.”

C.J. Reavis, senior safety
On the defensive mindset late in the game…
“I gave up two touchdowns personally and was down on myself. I thought as a defense we had to dig down and make plays and we did that down the stretch.”

On Southern Miss receiver Allenzae Staggers…
“I played with Staggers back in JUCO. He knows my game and I know his. It was good to battle against him. He’s a good receiver and I enjoyed playing against him today. He’s like another brother to me.”

Southern Miss (8-4, 6-2 C-USA)
Jay Hopson, head coach
Opening Statement…
“That was a hard-fought football game. Give Marshall a lot of credit, that was a war. We knew it would be a 60 minute game. We knew that coming up here. Hats off to them, they played a heck of a game and it went down to an extra point. We made some plays, they made plays. It was a hard-fought win.”

On even matchup…
“It was back-and-forth game the whole way. Both teams were 7-4 coming in, it was just a hard-fought football game. It went down to the last play or two. Certainly a good win, but those make you gray.”

On plays that stood out…
“Obviously the late forced fumble. The flea flicker was a big play. Ito [Smith] is Ito. You’re going to get that great effort every time. Defensively, we really played well. Other than the last series, we really picked it up a notch every time, especially in the second half. It was a hard-fought football game, we’re glad to get the win. With that said, it was great competition.”

On quarterback Kwadra Griggs…
“We missed a few shots early. In the first half, we had a few opportunities, but he settled down. And in the second half, he connected.”
