HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall Athletics announced its 2012 football slate Thursday afternoon.
The Herd will travel to 2011 Big East Champion and Discover Orange Bowl Champion West Virginia to begin the season once again, while also making a road trip to Big Ten power Purdue on Sept. 29.
Every game on the 2012 slate is also currently scheduled to be played on a Saturday, pending television selections. Three of the Herd's opponents (Houston-14, West Virginia-18 and Southern Miss-19) finished the 2011 season ranked in the Final USA Today Top 25 and six (WVU, Ohio, Purdue, Tulsa, Southern Miss and Houston) participated in bowls a season ago.
"This is a very competitive schedule," said Marshall Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick. "Coming off last season's bowl win, our program is on the rise and this schedule will only help raise the profile of Marshall Football."
After Marshall's annual "Friends of Coal Bowl" matchup with the Mountaineers on Sept. 1, the Herd will open its home schedule against Western Carolina (Sept. 8) before hosting the Ohio Bobcats in the annual "Battle of the Bell" the following weekend (Sept. 15). After the road games against Rice (Sept. 22) and Purdue (Sept. 29), Marshall will return home to face Tulsa on Oct. 6 before its bye weekend comes at the exact midpoint of the season.
"This is certainly another great schedule," Head Coach Doc Holliday said. "We are thrilled to have these six teams visit Joan C. Edwards Stadium this fall and our coaches and student-athletes are excited to prepare for the challenges ahead."
After a road date (Oct. 20) at Conference USA champion Southern Miss, the Herd will welcome UCF (Oct. 27) and Memphis (Nov. 3) for back-to-back home dates. Marshall's last three regular season games will be at UAB on Nov. 10, home versus Houston on Nov. 17 and at East Carolina on Nov. 24.
