HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Magazine publisher Phil Steele released his preseason 2014 All-Conference USA football teams Tuesday and the Herd was well represented, with 17 players from Coach Doc Holliday’s squad spread across the four teams, including eight on the first team.

Both figures were C-USA highs.

Quarterback Rakeem Cato, running back Steward Butler, wide receiver Tommy Shuler, center Chris Jasperse, defensive tackle James Rouse, defensive end Ra’Shawde Myers, linebacker Jermaine Holmes and safety A.J. Leggett were selected to the first team.

Defensive end Gary Thompson, linebacker Evan McKelvey and kick returner Deandre Reaves were picked for the second team.

Wideout Angelo Jean-Louis, offensive tackles Clint Van Horn and Sebastian Johansson and linebacker D.J. Hunter were named to the third team and cornerback Darryl Roberts and safety Taj Letman were fourth-team honorees.

Jasperse, Shuler and Rouse were first team selections by the C-USA coaches last season and Cato (the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year), Van Horn and Holmes made the second team. Myers, McKelvey and Roberts were honorable mention picks.

Thompson and Leggett were named to the league’s All-Freshman team by C-USA coaches.
