HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-Marshall football coach Doc Holliday has joined Twitter, the school announced Monday. The account’s handle is @DOCMUFB.
“It has become clear to me that Twitter and the social media world is, and will continue to be, a huge part of how we communicate with current and future Marshall University student athletes and fans,” said Holliday. “Our program is in a great position and I could not be happier with its direction. To capitalize on this, my staff and I have decided to launch the official Doc Holliday Twitter account. I look forward to this venture and the benefits it will provide Marshall football.”
Marshall Athletics has seen tremendous growth in its social media footprint the last three years. @HerdZone, the main athletics Twitter account, has grown from 1,400 followers to 10,272 since August of 2011. Last summer, the department launched sport-specific accounts as well, led by @HerdFB’s 4,491 followers. Thundering Herd fans can also follow Marshall’s Equipment (@HerdEquipment), Compliance (@MUCompliance), Facilities (@HerdFacilities) and Sports Medicine (@MUSportsMed) staffs as well.
Marshall’s Facebook page (Marshall University Athletics) has also gained in popularity and now boasts 28,300 likes. That figure, along with the @HerdZone Twitter account, ranks among the league leaders in Conference USA.
The Herd will kickoff the 2014 season with an Aug. 30 date at Miami (Ohio). That game is set for 3:30 p.m. ET and will air on ESPN3.com.
