Herd Returns With Three Solid Sessions

Herd Returns With Three Solid Sessions

8/19/2002

After two days of bad weather kept the 19th ranked Marshall Thundering Herd off the practice field, the team got in three solid practice sessions on Monday at Marshall Stadium.

“We saw a lot of good things out there today,” Herd coach Bob Pruett said. “I think the time off allowed some guys to get their legs back under them and we looked much fresher. Our conditioning is good and we had three mentally sharp practices.”

Both the early and late practice sessions contained extensive scrimmage situations, with the first team offense working against the first team defense and the second teams working against each other.

The highlight of the afternoon session came late in the practice when the first defensive unit held the starting offense out of the end zone from inside the 10 yard line for at least a dozen plays.

“Those guys did some good things out there today and that was good to see,” Pruett said. “We’ll have to see how it looks on film before we’ll know just how good it was, but I was pleased with their effort and intensity.”

Many of the players who have missed practice time also returned to full work Monday. Running back Franklin Wallace and quarterback Byron Leftwich were both heavily involved in the sessions, as were receivers Denero Marriott and Josh Davis. Junior wideout Darius Watts, who sprained a shoulder during Saturday’s abbreviated scrimmage, will be held out of practice this week to rehab the injury.

The Herd is scheduled to continue with two-a-day practices for the remainder of the week. Wednesday afternoon’s practice is scheduled to be another scrimmage before Pruett and members of the squad depart for Charleston to take part in the sold out “Paint The Capital Green” event at the Charleston Marriott.

The squad will close preseason camp on Saturday with a mock game scheduled for 2 p.m. at Marshall Stadium.

The Herd will open the 2002 campaign on Saturday, August 31, against Appalachian State. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Marshall Stadium. Fan interested in purchasing season or single-game tickets can do so at Ticket Booth A at the stadium daily from noon until 7 p.m.
