First Units Shine In Afternoon Scrimmage

After several weather aborted scrimmage attempts, the 19th ranked Marshall Thundering Herd finally got in a full scrimmage session Wednesday afternoon at Marshall Stadium.

The session featured the first offensive unit against the second defense and the No. 1 defense against the second offensive group. As expected, the first units dominated the day’s play.

“I was really pleased, I thought the scrimmage went pretty good,” head coach Bob Pruett said. “I was really pleased with tight end Jason Rader, I thought he had a great day.”

Rader, a junior from St. Albans, had six catches on the day for 109 yards. Sophomore receiver Josh Davis (Hickory Grove, SC) had a standout day as well, making six grabs for 124 yards and three touchdowns.

“Josh is a big play guy, he was a big play guy last year,” Pruett said. “That is the thing we have, if one guy is down, the next guy steps up.”

The guy throwing all those passes to Rader and Davis was senior Heisman Trophy candidate Byron Leftwich (Washington, D.C.). In his first extended scrimmage action of camp he completed 19 of 29 passes for 339 yards and three scores.

There were also plenty of defensive standouts on the afternoon. Senior Yancey Satterwhite (Tupelo, MS) got a hand on a punt and also picked off a pass from sophomore Stan Hill (Tupelo, MS) and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown.

Other defensive stars included sophomore J.T. Rembert (Columbia, MD) with a tackle for loss and a sack; sophomore Roberto Terrell (Dunellon, FL) with two pass breakups and a forced fumble, and junior Charles Tynes (Bluefield, WV) with a tackle for loss, a pass breakup and a sack.

The Herd will continue with the final two days of two-a-day practices Thursday and Friday before the final big scrimmage of camp on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Thursday’s sessions are set for 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. while Friday’s practices are set for 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Marshall fans attending any Herd practice can still purchase season or single game tickets at the stadium at Ticket Booth A. The ticket window is open Monday through Saturday from noon until 7 p.m.
