Marshall-Rice Game Notes

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-The Marshall football team (2-4, 1-1 C-USA) hosts Rice (2-3, 1-1 C-USA) for Homecoming with a 3 p.m. ET kickoff from Joan C. Edwards Stadium Saturday afternoon. The game will also be streamed live on at the link above.

Marshall dropped a 16-6 decision to UCF in a monsoon on the road last Saturday. The Herd was able to muster just 130 yards of total offense, but got a respectable defensive effort for the last three quarters, led by safety Omar Brown. Brown, the team leader in tackles, added to his total with 18 (13 solo, 5 assists) and also recorded his second interception of the season and his third forced fumble. Marshall's six points came on a 12-yard fumble return by cornerback Rashad Jackson after defensive end Vinny Curry, who had 4.5 tackles for loss and three sacks, jarred the ball loose.

The Owls defeated Memphis 28-6 at home last Saturday. Senior Tyler Smith provided the offensive spark for the Owls, rushing for a season-high 97 yards on 14 carries. It was Smith's most productive outing since he closed the 2009 season with back-to-back, 100-yard rushing efforts. The Owls' defense, which had given up 104 points in the previous two games, kept the Tigers out of the end zone on the strength of 10 tackles for loss, including a season-high five sacks.

Following Saturday's game, the Herd will head to Houston (6-0, 2-0 C-USA), who is nationally ranked in both polls, for a 4:30 p.m. ET kickoff against the Cougars next Saturday.
