Marshall travels to UAB on Saturday for a Conference USA East Divison contest. Kickoff at historic Legion Field is set for 4 p.m. (Eastern Time). The game will not be televised, however the UAB video feed will be available online to All-Access subscribers.
The Series: Marshall and UAB will be meeting for the fourth time on Saturday...Marshall leads the series 3-0, however all three contests have been highly competitive and decided by a touchdown or less...Marshall downed the Blazers 46-39 last season in Huntington...The Thundering Herd picked up a 32-24 win in its only trip to Legion Field in 2006 and narrowly downed UAB 20-19 in 2005.
Scouting the Thundering Herd: Marshall enters the UAB game following the team's first off week of the season... Marshall played its first six games in 35 days and now will play its final six regular season games in 57 days....the Thundering Herd is already 2-0 in conference with wins over Memphis and Southern Miss. The Herd has several offensive weapons, among them are tight end Cody Slate, receiver Darius Passmore and running back Darius Marshall. Slate, an All-Conference USA selection, has 234 yards receiving and two touchdowns, despite missing two games due to injury earlier this season. Passmore ranks among C-USA's top wideouts with a team high 558 receiving yards and four touchdowns, while Marshall leads the Herd in rushing with 481 yards and four scores. Defensively, Marshall cornerback DeQuan Bemby leads the team with 44 total tackles, followed by middle linebacker Maurice Kitchens (43) and All-Conference USA free safety C.J. Spillman (42).
Scouting the Blazers: Junior QB Joe Webb is UAB's leading rusher and passer...Webb has thrown for 1,509 yards and eight touchdowns with nine interceptions and is averaging 215.6 passing yards per contest, he also has 116 carries for 588 yards and six touchdowns (an average of 84 rushing yards per game)...Sophomore receiver Frantrell Forrest is UAB's top pass catcher with 33 catches for 419 yards and two scores. Defensively, senior linebacker Joe Henderson has 48 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss, while standout safety Will Dunbar has 41 total stops with an interception and four pass breakups. The Blazers' Swayze Waters is one of the top specialists in C-USA, Waters is 10-of-13 on field goals and is averaging 44.9 yards per punt.
The Last Meeting: Bernard Morris threw for 309 yards and accounted for two touchdowns to lead Marshall to a 46-39 win over UAB in the season finale for both schools on Nov. 24 of last year in Huntington. UAB rallied from a 28-7 halftime deficit and with 5:22 to go in the game UAB's Rashaud Slaughter scored a 4-yard touchdown to give the Blazers their first and only lead, only to have Morris direct a scoring drive to re-establish Marshall's lead. Darius Marshall scored on a 91-yard kickoff return in the second half. Cody Slate led all receivers with 72 receiving yards on six catches, while Darius Marshall rushed for 60 yards on just nine carries. Joe Webb was 14-of-26 for 200 yards and a touchdown in the contest.
