Marshall Football Racks Up Slew of Honors|

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The Marshall football program racked up a bunch of honors following its 24-23 win at FAU on Saturday.
Punt returner Devon Smith was named National Punt Returner of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards after his 77-yard punt return for touchdown in the second quarter gave Marshall a 7-0 lead en route to the victory. The wide receiver from White Plains, Md., had three catches and tied a team-high with 50 yards. His 35-yard reception late in the fourth quarter set up Justin Haig’s game-winning 41-yard field goal that completed the Herd's thrilling come-from-behind win.
Tight end Gator Hoskins was also named to the John Mackey Award Midseason Watch List. Hoskins has caught 12 passes for 210 yards, including five touchdowns, which is tied for the most among tight ends nationally. The Gainesville, Fla., native previously had been named to the Mackey Award’s preseason list.
Hoskins and Smith were among Marshall’s many honorees on Phil Steele’s Midseason All-Conference USA list. Both were named to the outlet’s first team, along with center Chris Jasperse, tackle Gage Niemeyer, wide receiver Tommy Shuler, defensive end Alex Bazzie and linebacker Jermaine Holmes. Quarterback Rakeem Cato and Smith (as a wide receiver) were named to the second team, while defensive lineman James Rouse, linebacker Neville Hewitt and defensive back Darryl Roberts were selected to the third team. The 12 citations were the most in the league, with North Texas’ nine ranking second.
