Nov. 6, 2006
IRVING, Texas - Marshall University senior linebacker Matt Couch and sophomore defensive back Jon Moravec earned Conference USA Defensive Player and Special Teams Player of the Week honors, respectively, for their performances in Marshall's 42-21 win over Tulane on Saturday.
Couch recorded a career-high 17 tackles in helping Marshall to its third straight victory. He added one quarterback hurry and two pass breakups in the winning effort. Couch helped lead a Marshall defensive effort that shut out the Green Wave in the fourth quarter.
Moravec blocked a punt on Tulane's 24 yard-line to open the fourth quarter. It resulted in a Marshall touchdown six plays later that broke a 21-21 tie and gave Marshall a lead that it would not relinquish. Moravec then forced a fumble on a Tulane kickoff return that was recovered by Marshall on the Tulane 26 yard line that led to MU's final score of the day.
Couch and Moravec join Quinton Smith of Rice who earned offensive honors after he ran for 171 yards on a career-high 31 carries and scored two rushing touchdowns, caught four passes for 72 yards and another TD to total 243 all purpose yards as the Owls won their third straight conference game over UTEP.
