HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-Marshall linebacker Tyson Gale was one of 12 student-athletes selected to Conference USA's All-Academic Team, the conference office announced on Friday.
This is Gale's (Alva, Okla.) second academic award of the season as he was tabbed a Capital One Academic All-District 2 honoree on Nov. 10.
Gale, who was a second-team All-C-USA midseason selection by Phil Steele, had 85 tackles this season (36 solo, 49 assists) with 10 tackles for loss, one interception and four pass breakups. The senior captain was also the Herd's long-snapper on both punts and kicks, helping power a Marshall kicking unit that was one of just three league schools to convert on 100 percent of its point-after tries.
He was named Conference USA's Defensive Player of the Week following the Herd's 17-13 win at Big East foe Louisville when he had a team-high seven tackles, including a tackle for loss, and the biggest play of the game when he stepped in front of Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater's pass to pick it off at the UL 30-yard line with 4:32 left. That turnover put the Herd offense in business deep in Cardinal territory and allowed it to cash in nearly three minutes later for the game-winning score. Gale led a defense that allowed just 60 yards rushing on 29 attempts (2.1 per carry) that day, including (-9) yards total offense in the first quarter.
