A Message from Mike Hamrick, Marshall Director of Athletics|
Dec. 17, 2013
It is just about time for the Thundering Herd to go bowling!
We are 10 days away from squaring off against the current ACC and soon-to-be Big Ten Maryland Terrapins. Having the opportunity for the first time in 16 years to play a team from a power conference in a bowl game solidifies our program’s progress over the last four years. Marshall football has a chance to post double-digit wins for the first time in over a decade (yes, a decade!) and it is time for all Thundering Herd supporters to jump on board!
We are roughly 12 days into bowl ticket sales -- with 10 days to go -- and quite frankly, at this moment we are not getting the job done. The reputation of our Marshall fans’ ability to travel and support our program during our many bowl appearances was one of the driving forces that made the decision to select us for the Military Bowl an easy one for their committee. It is important that we live up to our reputation as avid fans and bowl ticket sales are the measure of our value as a team being considered for bowl appearances. The young men on our team are traveling to the nation’s capital with a chance to get what I would consider a piece of redemption for what took place in the Pontiac Silverdome in 1997 at the Motor City Bowl.
This football team has a chance to do something that, flat out, has not been done before: beat a modern-day power conference school in a bowl game. It is imperative that we, as a Marshall athletic community, properly recognize and support that reality.
In 2013, your Herd won the Conference USA East Division title and played in the league championship game for the first time. Twenty-one players have been named to All-Conference USA teams along with the Offensive Player of the Year and the Co-Freshman of the Year. These facts clearly show the advancement of our football program and there are numerous key returnees that will be back in a Thundering Herd uniform for the 2014 season. This bodes well for the future with a chance for our highest preseason national ranking in over a decade – not to mention the likelihood of being a heavily-favored team to win the conference title.
The history of our football program is rich in success and has provided a foundation for the future. If there was ever a time to support our program, it is now. We have our Indoor Athletic Facility steel structure out of the ground (visit the following link (goo.gl/OlOd2B) . to view the progress of this state-of-the-art facility). The future is extremely bright and Coach Holliday’s goal of playing for and winning championships has become a reality.
If you have already purchased tickets to the game, I want to sincerely thank you for your support. If you have not yet purchased tickets, lower level seats are just $77 each and every dollar is a significant financial lift for all bowl expenses that our program incurs. If you are not able to attend the game in Annapolis, Md., we are working once again with the Veterans Ticket Foundation to send as many of our Armed Forces veterans to the game to cheer on the Herd. Tickets for students are sold at a reduced rate of $40 apiece. All tickets on sale through the Marshall Ticket office at this time are lower level chairback seats. Call 800-THE-HERD or visit HerdZone.com to purchase today.
When the ball is in the air on Dec. 27 at 2:30 p.m., I, along with 90 young men wearing Kelly Green will expect to look up in the stands at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to find thousands of you dressed in the same color, bellowing “WE ARE … MARSHALL!” As your Director of Athletics and the individual responsible for leading our very proud athletic program into the future, I ask that all of you join me and our HERD as we THUNDER to the Military Bowl.
Thank you for your loyal support and GO HERD!
Director of Athletics
