Tyler Warner's Monday Bowl Diary
Marshall's senior kicker updates fans from St. Petersburg
Dec. 20, 2011
Every night before we go to bed, our coaches come to make room checks to let us know what the plans are for the next morning. When Coach Joe Miday came to check Kase Whitehead and I, he told us we didn't have to wake up until noon. We both were pretty excited, and looking to take full advantage of that. Kase for sure did because he didn't wake up until twenty till noon. The team had a Kickoff Luncheon with FIU at noon, which was one of the main events of this bowl trip that I was excited about. I was excited because the keynote speaker happened to be Vince Papale from the movie "Invincible". When I found out a couple weeks ago that he was going to speak, I mentioned it to my roommate back in Huntington. He happens to be an Eagles fan, so he was a little jealous. Papale spoke about his invincible moment when he was able to prove everyone wrong and succeed by making the Philadelphia Eagles. Another pretty cool guest that was at the luncheon was Mike Alstott, who has, in the recent years, played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During the luncheon, we were given a good meal of fettucine alfredo, chicken breast, salad, carrots and asparagus. For dessert, we were given another chocolate cake. This has been four pieces of chocolate cake in the past three days!
At the luncheon, I sat with the one and only, Tyson Gale. Tyson had the opportunity this morning to go to a children's hospital with the other captains. He explained to me how humbling it was and how much of a good time he had. Tyson has been very dedicated to this football program over the past four years and deserved to be named a captain for his senior year.
The luncheon ended around one, so it gave my teammates and I an hour and a half to hang out before meetings. I was able to visit with my parents, my brother Bryce, and best bud Colin. My brother and Colin flew in from Pittsburgh a couple hours earlier, so when I saw them I had to laugh. Both were wearing long jeans and long sleeve and my brother looked like old Grizzly Adams or something with a flannel shirt and beard. They were in the mountains this weekend skiing and snowboarding, so I guess I can't blame them.
After meetings were over, the team headed over to the stadium for a walk-through. This let us enjoy ourselves and get a little tune up. Once we got back to the hotel, it was time for the dinner and "The Best Fridays in Football." This is time that coach gives us to watch ESPN, a movie, get treatment, massages, or an FCA bible study. I chose to attend the FCA bible study where we watched "I am Second" by Lecrae. It is a YouTube link where many famous people give their testimonies on how they came to know God. This entire season we have done a series on "Man Up" by Lecrae and some other Christian rappers. "Man Up" is a series on what being a real man of Christ is. It was pretty neat to see a bunch of guys come out this season.
When bible study was over, I walked into the ESPN room where the room was packed full with people. Many of the families were able to come and spend time with the players. I know this was great for many of my teammates since they probably haven't been able to see their family for a while.
Tonight, Coach Holliday is making sure the team gets our rest by making room checks at 9 p.m. The team, for the past three days, has been all smiles and enjoying itself. We have been very blessed and fortunate to be able to come on this trip. This trip is great and all, but my teammates understand that we are here for a reason, and that is to win.
