Men's Golf in Third after Day One at C-USA
Marshall ahead of Four Nationally-Ranked Teams
April 22, 2012
TEXARKANA, Ark.- After day one at the 2012 Conference USA Championships the Marshall University men’s golf team finds itself sitting in third place with a two-under score of 286 that leads eight other teams.
Of those eight teams no less than four are ranked top-50 in the nation, as UCF (23), UAB (34), East Carolina (33), and Tulsa (48) all trail Head Coach Joe Feaganes and his Thundering Herd squad at the end of round one play. Only Memphis (40) and SMU (42) lead the Herd at the moment, posting respective scores of 282 and 284 to sit just a few strokes ahead in first and second place.
Sophomore Brian Anania and junior Nathan Kerns currently lead the Herd with one-under scores of 71 that have the Marshall pair tied for eighth place. Senior Bosten Miller and freshman Tas Sipowski are both just one stroke off Anania and Kerns with even-par scores of 72 that have them tied for 10th place, while sophomore Jeremy Rogers’ score of 83 has him trailing the pack in 54th.
Anania and Kerns combined for seven birdies and an eagle, while Sipowski provided one of the highlights of the day with a hole-in-one on the 11th that landed straight in the cup without ever touching the green. His ace, combined with the stellar play of his teammates, has left the Herd in a position to compete for first place entering tomorrow’s second round of 18.
“We played solid for most of the round and had it at about six-under at one time,” said Feaganes. “We lost a couple strokes coming down the stretch but hung in there and put ourselves in a good position to compete for the rest of the tournament. Tomorrow is going to be a key day with some good teams on our heels, but we’re going to go out there and give it everything we’ve got.”
The second round will tee-off tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. with Marshall beginning at 8:50 a.m. alongside SMU and Memphis. Live results and access to C-USA’s Tournament Central may be found by clicking the links below.
