EDMOND, Okla. – Senior Brian Anania (Hurricane, W.Va.) is in the top 10 at the Conference USA Men’s Golf Championship after shooting a 2-over-par 72 in the first round, Sunday, at Oak Tree Golf Club.
“Brian had a great round today,” coach Matt Grobe said. “To finish the day, he made an awesome birdie on this final hole in front of a big crowd. It was exciting to see.”
Despite inclement weather that delayed tee times more than four hours, the Herd completed the first 18 holes of the 54-hole championship in 10th place out of a 14-team field. Marshall carded a 26-over 306 on the first day, 18 strokes behind leader Tulsa (8-over 288).
“We didn’t play well today,” Grobe said. “The guys are pretty down. The winds blew between 30 to 40 miles per hour all day and we just didn’t hit the ball well enough. We still have two rounds to go but we have put ourselves in a pretty big hole.”
Anania will begin the next round five strokes behind leader Logan McCracken of Tulsa, who shot a 3-under 67 on the first day.
