NEWPORT, R.I. - Thundering Herd senior Shawn Warren (Windham, Maine) finished in the top five of his fifth career tournament to lead Marshall at the Adams Cup of Newport at Newport National Golf Club. Warren finished with a final-round 74 in route to a 217 (74-69-74) to finish in a tie for third place, and Marshall as a team finished in a tie for ninth place out of 12 teams with Southern Miss with a 911 (301-297-313).

South Florida claimed the team title with a three-round total of 894 (297-296-301), one stroke better than the University of Hartford (299-302-294=895) and host Rhode Island (295-297-303=895).

Warren, Justin Fetcho of South Florida, and Ben Spitz of Rhode Island each finished in third with a 217. Tyler Hitchcock of South Florida finished in second with a 214 (68-73-73), while Joel Myrick of Southern Miss won medalist honors after posting a total of 213 (71-69-73).

For the Thundering Herd, freshman Christian Brand finished in a tie for 11th place with a 225 (75-76-74) after carding a third-round 74. Brand now has a third and 11th place finish in his first two starts as a collegian. Other scores for Marshall were Trent Schambach (Glen Dale, W.Va.), who ended the tournament with a 234 (74-80-80), Brandon Katzeff (Uniontown, Pa.), who carded a 239 (78-76-85), and Dustin Cutlip (Marlington, W.Va.), who ended his first collegiate tournament in a tie for 59th after posting a 241 (79-76-86).

 

 

The Thundering Herd returns to action next Monday and Tuesday for its last tournament of the fall at the Xavier Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio.
