BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Marshall men’s golf senior Alex Weiss won the Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational Tuesday with a three-round, 8-under 208. It was Weiss’s second win of the fall and he has finished in the top five in each of the Herd’s four tournaments in 2017-18.
The Thundering Herd finished seventh of 16 on the team side. Weiss led the way with a 1-under 71 in round one, 2-under 70 in round two and a 5-under 67 in the third round. The Pickerington, Ohio, native pulled himself back toward the top of the leaderboard with a strong finish in round two. After beginning with a plus-3 in the first eight holes, Weiss birdied five-straight to get to 2-under. He recorded 12 total birdies throughout the tournament.
Redshirt sophomore Ben Roeder jumped up 14 spots on the leaderboard after shooting a 1-under 71 in the final round. Roeder improved by seven shots from the first to second round and then improved again in the third.
The players dealt with fog this morning and were delayed one hour and 15 minutes from the original scheduled start time of 8:30 a.m. The teams still had to finish round two, after play was halted Monday night due to darkness and then move straight on to round three.
Bowling Green won the team competition with an even par 864. The host team, West Virginia University, came in second just two shots back. Etienne Papineau of West Virginia finished as the runner-up with a 5-under 211, three shots back from Weiss.
Head Coach Matt Grobe
“Alex (Weiss) played great today. He is playing great! As a team we took a step back today. We keep getting ourselves into the mix but we have to learn to close out a tournament. We will get back to Huntington later today and get back to work tomorrow.”
