Golf Team Off to Slow Start at Kentucky
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Prevailing winds and the threat of storms hampered the first day of the Johnny Owens Invitational Friday.
Despite the conditions, the University of Kentucky men?s golf team finished the opening round of the Johnny Owens Invitational in first place. In the first round of the first collegiate golf tournament to be played at the newly-finished par 71 University Club of Kentucky, three Wildcats finished under par to give UK an early six stroke lead over 17 regional rivals.
Kentucky leads the field with an even par 284. Eastern Kentucky and Xavier are second at 290, followed by Miami (OH) at 293 and Purdue at 294.
Marshall was not as fortunate as their hosts. The entire Thundering Herd lineup shot well over par on the day, with the best performance coming from senior Aaron Williams who finished the day with a four over par 75 (tied for 32nd). Combined Marshall recorded a 301 Friday and now stands 17th out of 18 teams, with the some of the second and all of the third round still to be played.
UK Junior Andy Dustman led the way for the Cats by firing a 4-under par 67 to land in first place. Fellow Wildcats John Holmes and Ryan Coyne also had a stellar afternoon by finishing with a 68 and 70, respectively. Along with the three Wildcats, Eric Phipps of Miami of Ohio and Nicholas Atzinger of Morehead State were the only other competitors to shoot under par.
By mid-afternoon many of the participants were well into their second round of the day when lightning and steady rain caused the tournament to be postponed. After a short deliberation, officials decided to resume the second round of play in progress on Saturday, Mar. 30. With this decision, the tournament will remain a 54-hole invitational with play concluding on Saturday.
Action will begin earlier than scheduled at 7 a.m. on Saturday at the University Club.
