FARMINGTON, Utah – Former Marshall golfer Christian Brand finished in the Top 20 at the Utah Championship in the Web.com Tour with a four-round, 17-under par, 267. Brand shot a course record 10-under, 61 in the second round.
Brand who teed off for Marshall from 2006-11, birdied 11 holes and had just one bogey on Friday July 14 to finish with the course record 61. Brand began the day on the back nine with a bogey on No. 10. He then birdied the next five and recorded six more birdies on the front nine.
“I felt better about my game than the scores I’ve been shooting,” Brand said in an interview after his record-setting day. “It’s nice to get a little validation these next couple days and the couple days to come.”
Brand shot a 4-under 67 in the first round, a third round 70 and then finished with a fourth round 69. He ended the four-day tournament in a tie for 13th place, his best finish of the 2017 Web.com Tour season. It was his third Top 20 finish of the year.
The Charleston, W.Va., native was named the 2006-07 Conference USA Freshman of the Year. Brand led Marshall as a senior in the 2010-11 season with a 73.24 average over 33 total rounds. His low individual round of the year was a 3-under 69 at the Furman Intercollegiate (March 18-20, 2011). His best tournament finish his senior year came at the Kentucky Bluegrass Intercollegiate as Brand finished tied for seventh as Marshall finished tied for fourth.
