Aug. 30, 2008
FARMINGTON, Pa. - The Marshall University men's golf team will tee-off its 2008 fall season on Sunday at the 12-team Rutherford Intercollegiate, hosted by Penn State, at the Mystic Rock Course at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort.
Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, former home of the PGA Tour's 84 Lumber Classic, is a Pete Dye-designed course that spans 7,533 yards with a par-72 layout. The 54-hole, three-day event starts on Sunday and will conclude on Tuesday, with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. each day.
Joe Feaganes, entering his 37th year as head coach of the Thundering Herd, will place six of his golfers into the Rutherford Intercollegiate field led by MU's lone senior, Nathan Kinker (Barboursville, W.Va.). Kinker claimed the No. 1 spot for Feaganes after three rounds of qualifying and is coming off a junior season in which he averaged 76.26 strokes per round, second on the team and 2.7 strokes less than his average the previous season.
Kinker and Christian Brand (Charleston, W.Va.) were named team co-captains for the 2008-09 season. Brand, last year's team stroke average leader (74.23), will play out of the No. 2 spot to commence his junior campaign. Carson Schambach, younger brother of former Herd golfer and current student assistant Trent Schambach (2004-08), will make his collegiate debut in southwestern Pennsylvania as MU's No. 3 and is the lone Herd freshman to qualify for the event.
Joining Marshall and the host Nittany Lions at the Rutherford Intercollegiate will be Ball State, Bowling Green, Miami (Ohio), Missouri, Purdue, Richmond, Toledo, UNC Wilmington, VCU and Xavier.
