HUNTINGTON – Marshall men’s golfer Nathan Kerns has been named Marshall student-athlete of the week after his tie for third place finish at the Bearcat Invitational.
Kerns’ tie for third at the Bearcat continued a strong fall for the Ironton, Ohio golfer as he now has three top three finishes out of his team’s four tournaments.
The senior was just one stroke off the lead and one stroke away from being including in the playoff to determine the individual champion at Traditions Golf Club.
After a rocky first round, Kerns rebounded with a three-under-par 69, the lowest of any golfer in the second round. He would card a one-under-par 71 on the final 18 holes to finish with a two-under-par 214.
His round of 69 was just one of three in the whole tournament to finish a round of 69 or lower.
Despite damp, wet and windy conditions, Kerns still managed to race up the leaderboard. After sitting in 28th follow round one, the Ironton, Ohio native made up 19 spots and moved up to a tie for ninth following round two play.
His effort and strong play helped the Thundering Herd compile a third place finish, its best since the season-opening Marshall Invitational when it finished tied for second.
