CONWAY, S.C. – The Marshall men’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at No. 19 Coastal Carolina Saturday night. The match was the final exhibition action for both squads.
Herd freshman Pedro Dolabella scored first in the 23rd minute off a pass from senior Brayan Lopez-Mendez. The Chanticleers tied the match in the 34th minute.
“The lads showed excellent team spirit,” Herd coach Chris Grassie said. “That was a good way to finish our preseason. Coastal is a top 25 team, and on the road, we showed we can play at that level. To be honest, we had the better of the chances to go on and win it. I also thought we did a much better job in possession than we did against Radford last week.”
Freshman Kyle Winquist played the entire match in goal for Marshall and finished with five saves. The Herd outshot Coastal Carolina 12-9. Both teams had six shots on goal.
“We still have a lot to work on,” coach Grassie said. “We gave away a soft goal tonight, when we switched off mentally. However, the play from us was very good and the team spirit was excellent. We're all very excited to get into the regular season. This performance gives us a lot to build on.”
The 2017 regular season begins Friday, Aug. 25 as the Thundering Herd welcomes the UNC Asheville Bulldogs to Hoops Family Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
