Herd Soccer Opens Season with Scoreless Draw Versus Xavier|
Sept. 1, 2010
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Despite outshooting Xavier 21-3, the Marshall University men's soccer team was unable to find the back of the net and drew even, 0-0, with the Musketeers in the opening match of the 2010 season, played Wednesday night at Sam Hood Field.
The Thundering Herd blitzed XU right out of the gates as MU almost found the net multiple times. An alert play from senior captain Sammy Boateng in the seventh minute found Xavier goal keeper Justin Marshall off his line and Boateng's shot from just past half field was barely tipped over the cross bar.
Less than a minute later a Musketeer defender had to clear a Devin Perkins shot off the goal line. Despite the pressure and outshooting XU 8-1 in the first 45 minutes, Marshall failed to break the scoreless tie.
The second half was more of the same. MU outshot Xavier 7-1 in the second 45 and almost won the game with 30 seconds to go when a Carl Munday cross found Perkins open in the middle but his header ricocheted off the cross bar.
In sudden death overtime the piping was once again unkind to the Thundering Herd as Tom Jackon's shot just one minute into the first overtime also hit the crossbar. However, it was not to be and the two sides opened the season at 0-0-1.
"We took it to them, statistically you can see that," said head coach Bob Gray. "We had several good chances and hit the crossbar twice. We played in their half of the field and I don't think they really had one good scoring threat against us.
"I like our team. I think it bodes well for the future, but obviously we are going to have to put some of those chances away. We know there are a lot of one goal games out there, and this is a game that we should have gotten the victory. But we will build from this because we have a lot of games coming up."
The Herd has one day off before its next match when Marshall travels to Rochester, Mich., to take on Oakland. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
