FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Marshall men’s soccer team fell 2-1 in a non-conference match at Fort Wayne. The Thundering Herd is now 5-3-1 this season while the Mastodons improve to 3-5-3.
Fort Wayne took the early lead in the 14th minute as Oscar Uyamadu converted on his third goal of the season. Marshall had seven shots in the first half, but could not send one in and went into the break trailing 1-0.
The Herd came out firing in the second half with six shots in the first twelve minutes. Fort Wayne extended the lead with a goal in the 61st minute. Marshall kept up the pressure but Mastodon goalkeeper Will Hathaway made twelve saves in the contest.
Freshman Lewis Knight scored his eighth goal of the season with a header, off a cross from the left by sophomore Carlos Diaz-Salcedo. The goal came in the 77th minute to cut the lead in half. Knight had two more opportunities in the closing minutes but could not convert.
Herd freshman keeper Kyle Winquist had his first start of the season and recorded four saves and allowed the two goals.
Head Coach Chris Grassie:
"I'm very unhappy with this result. We created more chances in this match than any other all season. Fort Wayne, gave us the ball and let us play, and we created about 20 decent chances. If you want to win, you have to score your chances, it's as simple as that.
At the other end, we didn't defend two long punts, let it bounce and got punished for poor one-on-one defending.
Not a vintage performance from us, but if we take the positives from this: the chances, the territory, and the possession, we will be fine."
Marshall returns to Hoops Family Field on Saturday, Sept. 30, against Conference USA foe New Mexico. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
