BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- After taking the lead in the first half through a Jahvon Allison goal, the Marshall University men’s soccer team surrendered two second half goals to UAB as the Blazers downed the Thundering Herd 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The loss is Marshall’s second-straight in Conference USA competition and drops the Herd to 2-3 in conference play and 10-3-1 overall. UAB improves to 8-5-2 overall and 3-3 in league play with the win.

The afternoon started brightly for the Herd when Jahvon Allison scored just six minutes into the first half. It was the sophomore’s second goal of the season and got Marshall off to a bright start in what was a pivotal road match for the team.

Yet the Blazers responded in kind, outshooting the Herd 14 to 8 through the course of the match while putting two in the back of the net. Mladen Lemez struck first, sending a penalty kick past Marshall goalkeeper Daniel Withrow in the 58th minute to level the score at 1-1. Then, with just one minute to play, Karl Chester scored the winner as UAB clinched 3 crucial points for its postseason initiative.

“It was just one of those games that wasn’t meant to be for us,” said head coach Bob Gray. "We had chances, including a point-blank effort right before they scored the deciding goal. I thought we were the better side on the day, so this was tough loss. Now we need to move forward and get a big win on Tuesday.”

Jahvon Allison and Andrew Ferguson led Marshall with two shots apiece, while UAB’s Reed Matte led both teams with four shots of his own. The loss marks the third straight season in which the Herd has fallen to UAB during the regular season.

Marshall will now play FIU on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in what will essentially be a must-win for the Thundering Herd squad. The game will be held at Hurricane High School with free admission for the public.
