HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – In its final contest of the 2013 season, the Marshall men’s soccer team fell to UAB 2-1 on Senior Night on Hoops Family Field at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
The Thundering Herd ends the season with a 2-11-6 record and a 0-6-3 mark in Conference USA play. The win lifts the 17th-ranked Blazers to 12-4-1 overall and 5-3-1 in league play.
Prior to the contest, co-captains Zach Hunter (Marietta, Ga.) and Travis Brent (Virginia Beach, Va.) were recognized prior to their final game for Marshall in a Senior Night Ceremony, along with Tyler Atwell (Hurst, Texas), Cody Partyka (Venetia, Pa.) and Anthony Virgara (Pittsburgh).
Just six minutes into the match, UAB’s Alex Clay scored on a strike from 10 yards out from Freddy Ruiz for his seventh goal of the season, putting the Blazers on top 1-0.
Able to take its goal advantage into the half, UAB led 7-5 in shots over the Herd as the Blazers’ back line did not buckle against the Marshall offensive attack. Hunter led the Herd with two shots on goal after the first 45 minutes of play.
The Blazers extended their lead as Clay scored again, this time off a cross, to put his side up 2-0 in the 60th minute.
Marshall refused to be shutout as junior Jahvon Allison (Kingston, Jamaica) shot through the fray in front of the UAB net to cut into the deficit and make it 2-1 in the 83rd minute.
As time expired and the 2013 season concluded for the Herd, Allison, Jack Hopkins
(Birmingham, Ala.) and Hunter paced the Herd with 4 shots each.
With the win, UAB now leads the series 8-2-1. The Blazers have won four straight against Marshall.
