HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall men’s soccer freshman phenom Lewis Knight was named to the College Soccer News All-Freshman Second Team. Knight led the Thundering Herd in scoring with nine goals, 21 points and three game-winners.
Knight is one of three players from Conference USA honored as Brandon Perdue of Old Dominion and Enrique Facusse of Kentucky were named to the third team.
“It’s nice to see Lewis get this recognition,” Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. “I know he feels strongly that all the freshmen on our team played a big role this season, and he’s happy to represent the group. Personally, I’m very excited about the future, and Lewis’ part in it. He scored plenty of goals this year, but he knows there is still so much room for improvement. I’m sure he will put the work in to become one of the top strikers in all of college soccer.”
The Leeds, England, native started off the season with a bang, scoring two goals in the season-opener at home against UNC Asheville. Two games later, Knight scored two more goals at Duquesne in a 3-1 win after trailing 1-0 at the half. It didn't take long for teams to know that they needed to game plan for Knight.
Perhaps Knight’s biggest goal of the season came in the 1-0 win over No. 21 Kentucky at home. In a scoreless battle, Knight took a pass from fellow freshman Jamil Roberts and headed a shot into the back of the net in the 72nd minute. It was Marshall’s first win over UK since 2011. The Herd later defeated the Wildcats in the first round of the C-USA Tournament.
The Marshall men’s soccer team has an exciting future ahead after advancing to the second round of the Conference USA tournament this season with a fairly young squad. Freshmen accounted for 16 of Marshall’s 22 goals in 2017.
