HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University men's soccer team released its 2012 spring schedule of opponents on Wednesday, as it set the dates for seven matches spanning from March 3 to April 22.
The Thundering Herd will begin the spring slate with a March 3 game against the University of Dayton at 1:00 p.m. in Dayton, Ohio. The Flyers were 5-13-1 last season - and a less-than-stellar 1-9 in non-conference games - but graduated only three seniors from last year's team.
Marshall will then travel to Columbus, Ohio, for a trifecta of matches to be played from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 31. The Herd will begin with a 1:00 match against Bowling Green before squaring-off against Northern Kentucky some two hours later in a 3:00 showdown. Immediately following, Marshall will face its final opponent of the day in a 5:00 battle with Ohio Dominican. Combined, the three teams were an impressive 30-19-6 last season, and should provide Marshall with a stout spring season test.
The Herd will then move forward to an April 7 game against the University of Charleston at 2:00 p.m. in Charleston, W.Va. The Golden Eagles were a solid 13-6 last season, and concluded the fall with an NCAA Div. II national ranking of 11.
Eight days later, the Herd will travel to Harrisonburg, Va., for an 11:00 a.m. duel with a James Madison team that posted a 13-5-2 record last year while advancing to the NCAA's Round of 16. The Marshall squad will then play its final match of the spring season when it faces Davis and Elkins College in Charleston, W.Va., at 2:00 p.m. on April 22.
"I believe our spring schedule allows us to play against some good competition as we prepare for next fall," said Head Coach Bob Gray. "I look forward to seeing how we perform this spring as we get ready for what we believe will be an exciting 2012 season."
