@HerdMSoccer Picked Ninth in Preseason C-USA Coaches Poll

Head Coach Bob Gray with Assistant Coach Alex Fatovic

Aug. 7, 2013

IRVING, Texas – Conference USA, with four new members in men’s soccer, announced its 2013 preseason coaches’ poll and honors Wednesday.

Marshall, with the youngest team Coach Bob Gray has had in his 19 season guiding the Thundering Herd, was picked ninth in the 2013 poll after finishing seventh in the league in 2012 with a record of 11-5-1 (3-5-0 C-USA).

Marshall also finds itself in a transition year as the Herd played its 2012 season without a permanent home field during the construction of the Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex. The grand opening is scheduled Aug. 23 at 5 p.m. as the men will play an exhibition against Marshall Alumni.

Gray said the Herd finds itself in much more challenging conference as six current C-USA men's soccer members made the NCAA Tournament last season: Tulsa, New Mexico, Charlotte, Old Dominion, Kentucky and UAB.

The league also announced its preseason player honors for 2013. More than 20 all-conference players return to C-USA teams in 2013, including eight who earned all-league first team recognition and 12 players who were named to an NSCAA All-Region team.

With 10 newcomers and the loss of Daniel Withrow, who was drafted by the Columbus Crew in the second round of the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft, Marshall will look to grow with a roster consisting of 12 freshmen and nine sophomores.

The Herd men will start its 2013 campaign in an exhibition match at Akron on Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. against a Zips’ team that has advanced to the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament in five straight seasons.
