BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The Marshall University men’s soccer team has its first competition of the 2010 season on Saturday afternoon as the Thundering Herd takes on Gardner-Webb in an exhibition match.

The contest, which will be played at a neutral site, is set to take place in Bluefield, W.Va., with a 3 p.m. kickoff at the East River Soccer Complex.

Coming off a 10-7-2 campaign in 2009, aspirations are high for the Herd with a Conference USA title in sight. Nine returning starters are back, along with a strong incoming class that should contribute all season.

“We are excited to play a game,” head coach Bob Gray said. “Preseason is a grind. We have been playing each other twice a day for a week now so it’s good to face another opponent to see what we are made of.

“It also gives us a chance to use a lot of players to see where our depth is,” Gray continued. “We have some good young players and it allows us to evaluate them and see where they fit.”

MU will be back in action on Aug. 25th when the Herd takes on the University of Charleston in its final exhibition match. The contest with Charleston is set for 7 p.m. at Sam Hood Field on the campus of Marshall University.
