HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall has a new head coach for the first time since 1995. Chris Grassie takes over after building the University of Charleston into a perennial powerhouse on the Division II level. Grassie was a graduate assistant with the Herd from 2004-06. While with Charleston, Grassie’s squads won 99 matches in six seasons, winning the conference championship six times and finished as the national champion runner-up twice.
Marshall returns 11 players from the 2016 season. 14 newcomers will suit up for the Herd this season. Senior Nate Himes is the top returner in goal after logging over 470 minutes and recording 12 saves in six matches. Senior Christian Kershaw and juniors Chris Taibi and John Pappas are the leading returners in minutes played with all three recording over 1,500 minutes of action in 2016.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Marshall last met UNC Asheville in 2012 as the Herd won 2-1. Marshall leads the all-time series 4-1 over the Bulldogs. UNC Asheville finished the 2016 season with a record of 6-13. The team is looking to fill the shoes of graduated leading scorer Zach Joens who had eight goals and 19 points. Senior Andrew Lawrence is the top returning scorer with two goals and four assists in 2016. The top returning goalkeeper is redshirt junior Tyler Moore who played in six matches, recorded nine saves and allowed ten goals.
SCOUTING THE PURPLE ACES
Marshall and Evansville are tied 2-2 in the all-time series. The two squads have played each of the past three seasons with the Purple Aces winning 2-1 in Evansville in 2016. The Purple Aces finished the 2016 season 10-8-3 and lost in the second round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. Top scorers Ian McGrath and Zac Blaydes return. McGrath led the squad with 11 goals and two assists while Blaydes chipped in three goals and assisted on ten others. Both Frederik Reimer and Matthew Keller return in goal. Reimer started 18 matches as a freshman, recorded 50 saves and finished with a 9-6-2 record.
